- ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆This is a very friendly cosmopolitan place in the heart of Ohakune. It has been run for decades by Carl and Maureen. The local farm, mill and skifield workers meet here for beer, whiskey and watching rugby, and the local farmers wives and professional women meet for coffee, wine and cake. In summer there are the trail-riding cyclists and in winter the snowboarders. And I have met an amazing variety of international visitors there. There is mellow 1970s music, newspapers and Maureens quirky signs to engage your attention, and the girls behind the counter are friendly, efficient and lovely. The meals are on the high-calorie side; with the vegetable muffins my favourites snack, the fettuccine being my tasty low calorie choice of an evening meal, and the lamb shanks my special treat. The information elsewhere on this page is inaccurate. It welcomes people with children and is a great place for them. And there is big sheltered smokers deck at the rear, with tv and heaters.
